Join us in this joyful cardiovascular dance workout that stimulates and integrates mind, body and spirit. We will blend dance, martial arts and healing arts. Let's let our inner-dancers, inner-athletes, inner-warriors, and inner-children play while we exercise.
Nia is performed barefoot (though soft-soled shoes can be worn). Everyone is welcome to any Nia class. No prior training is necessary.
Through movement we find health....
More About Nia Nia is a body/mind/spirit movement practice that is suitable for bodies of all types and abilities. Practiced barefoot to diverse music, Nia offers non-impact cardiovascular exercise that increases strength, flexibility, agility, mobility and stability. Movements are created based on the anatomical design of the body and the sensation of pleasure over pain in emphasized. Nia students often become devoted to the practice through the Joy of Movement, and report a greater sense of body awareness and acceptance.
Nia incorporates choreographed movements inspired by 9 movement forms: Martial Arts (Tae Kwon Do, Tai Chi, and Aikido); Dance Arts (Jazz, Modern and Duncan Dance): and Healing Arts (Alexander Technique, the work of Moshe Feldenkrais, and Yoga). In addition, Nia allows for personal self-expression through FreeDance, which encourages participants to move in new ways and break movement habits and patterns.
Participants in Nia classes receive guidance in adapting movement for their level of ability, which can include use of a chair if necessary. Every Nia class is a unique experience, guided by a weekly focus and intent designed to engage student’s minds and stimulate body awareness.
